Did I really have an orgasm while meditating?

Johanina Wikoff

Q: While meditating recently, I felt the urge to open my mouth and hold my head back. After a few moments I experienced an intense physical surge, parallel to internal feelings of ecstasy. It felt as if I was receiving some kind of energy through my mouth that flooded me with intense sexual feelings, culminating in an orgasm. Sure, it was pleasurable, but I was astounded and maybe a little weirded out. Is this unusual, common, or what?
A: Many people experience erotic feelings while meditating. When we are consciously aware and present to the flow of energy, we begin to notice that the energy that we feel most strongly in sex, when allowed to, will naturally flow up the spine and down the legs in undulating waves that are pleasurable. In many meditation practices, we relax and then become aware of physical sensations, following the breath; this openness creates a space for all kinds of experiences to occur. Erotic feelings are one of those experiences. If you simply notice the sensations and do not become attached and hold on to them or judge them, or yourself as wrong for having them, they will come and go as they naturally are meant to.
